Editing Celebration

Hip Hip Hooray! I finished line editing my 92,823 word MS!!!!! I’ve been working on it for six months. It takes a long time to go through that many words.

I don’t really know what to do with myself now. I guess I should start working on the next WIP, but I want to take a little break and CELEBRATE!

So while editing is on my brain this is how I edit.

  1. Macro Edits—Plot Holes, Set Pieces, Beginnings, Endings
  2. Mid Edits—Pacing, Flow, Dialogue, Characterization, Themes, Symbolism
  3. Micro Edits—Punctuation, Adverbs, Tags, A close look at every—single—word.

How do you approach editing? I would love to know. Got any great tips?

Ha I love that song!! And you deserve a HUGE congrats! That is a major accomplishment for sure.
I do my first round of edits right after the first draft and tighten sentences, prose, dialog, and fix punctuation. Then I send off to CPs and set it aside for awhile. Once I have CP comments I go in and fix according to suggestions, usually with a chapter by chapter edit before reading the story again as a whole. Of course, I always find more to fix.
Then, I send it to another CP for feedback on all the edits. After that's done and I've set the story aside for a few weeks, I revise with new CP feedback. Then wait again for a week or so. I send the story to my Kindle and read it as I would a brand new story. It gives me a fresh perspective and I always find a plot hole or two to fix. I try to read a different book or two before reading mine on Kindle so I can have that fresh reader eye.
It's such a long process, but worth it in the end.
Best of luck on your continued revisions! :)

Congrats!!! What is the novel about? Have you started the submission process?
I have a draft of a novel I need to edit, but the process is so intimidating that I can't get around to it...
