Conference Prep—Let’s Get It Started!

I LOVE writing conferences! A weekend of talking about writing, learning about writing, hanging out with people who love writing—it doesn’t get better than that.

I’m going to LDStorymakers on May 4-5. I went last year and it rocked my world. So I thought it would be fun for us to talk about conferences these next two weeks (except for tomorrow—I have an awesome Neighbor interview for you).

And I’m pitching to an agent for the first time so I’m going to need your help. Please check back with me so I can pick your brilliant minds :)

What do you think? Writing conferences—love them or leave them?

-Angie

I just finished the NESCBWI conference - New England Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (I'm YA) and it was AWESOME. Just being around people who are into writing is amazing in itself. Met some super cool agents & made some good connections.

I'm addicted to conference. I used to go to the SCBWI annual meetings either in NYC or LA, but now I prefer to go to the RWA nationals. I haven't pitched to an agent yet. I was going to last year, but then realized my novel would be ready in time. It will be ready for this years pitches, but I'm still not doing it.

Sorry, no advice from me, other than don't get so nervous that you puke on the agent. I find that never works in your favor. lol

I've never been to a conference, but I'm really looking forward to going at some point in the near future. Good luck with your pitch!

I love writing conferences. If I'm feeling stuck on editing or writing, it helps recharge my batteries. Sometimes writing can be a bit isolating, and meeting other writers that are running into the same editing snarls in their pieces is useful. Good luck with the agent!

I've been to a few conferences and the best part is really being surrounded by people who love books and writing as much as you do. I'm going to one in September that's craft based as opposed to different panels and workshops etc. I've never been to one like it so I'm both excited and nervous. :)

Regarding the pitch session - I've done something like it once or twice and I was so nervous but the agent(s) were so nice and encouraging. Try not to make yourself too crazy. :)

I love them. I wish I had a fountain of money so I could attend several a year. Last year I went to a couple that were within driving distance. I've decided to skip them in 2012 and pick one for 2013. I pitched at one last year. I'd like to do that again.

Love love love love love love LOVE them! Especially Storymakers. I'm excited to see you there! My post Thursday is going to be about what I wish I had known before pitching. :)

Ooh. I'll be at LDStorymakers too. It's my first time and I'm so excited. I'm doing a pitch as well and have never done one before so I'm kinda freaking out.

LOVE writing conferences! I just went to a one-day conference in Boise and got to meet an agent, and it was fabulous. Good luck with your pitch! I've done that before too, and it's scary, but fun too.

Love em. Storymakers is going to get it on, to the break of dawn! Well, maybe not dawn, but at least midnight :).

love, Love, LOVE them! I learn so much that my brain feels like it's going to explode, and I want to go home and do it all--at once! Plus I've met such wonderful people. They totally make it for me.

I have never been to a conference, but it has always been something I want to do. I have no way to travel even the three hours to the closest possible one they have, nor the money to do it.

I keep hoping, though!

Never been to one either :) I've only been writing for like a little less than a year so I haven't had the desire to before that. Now it's on all my Birthday and Christmas lists!

I've never been to one and I imagine the only reason I might consider it is to meet other writers. I have no desire to meet with agents, which seems to be one of the main reasons other writers go. I tend to get my "talking about writing" fix by taking it out on my husband. He's a good sport though.

Haven't done one yet but I do love writing groups! Eager to hear more!

I've only been to one writing conference and it was so fun! Next time, however, I'd like to go to a smaller more intimate conference. The SCBWI regional conference was overwhelming! I hope you have an amaaaazing time.

I've never been to a conference before, but I'd love to go to one. It'd be great to meet other people who also love writing and have devoted their lives to it.

I'm so excited for Storymakers!!! Then I can find you and give you a big hug and tell everyone that you are my bestest friend ever and they should all be publishing/representing your book, even people who aren't editors/agents! (OMGosh could you imagine if I really just talked Angie to everyone at the conference? LOL!) I am excited though and I do give almost everyone a hug. The only time I don't is when I can see the FEAR in their eyes as I approach.
