Random Ramblings—Writers on Writing

Happy Thursday! I’m too busy with a fun new project to give you post today, so I’m going to share a few quotes about writing.

As writers we all seem to collect quotes (just one more thing we have in common). Here are 10 that I love :)

-Angie

The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say. – Anais Nin

You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you. – Ray Bradbury

Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia. – E.L. Doctorow

I try to leave out the parts people skip. – Eleanor Leonard

Substitute “damn” every time you’re inclined to write “very:” your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. – Mark Twain

"The best time for planning a book is while you're doing the dishes." - Agatha Christie

"The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter - it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." - Mark Twain

"If your characters cry, your readers won't have to; if your characters have good reason to cry and don't, your readers will do the weeping." - Orson Scott Card

I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions. – James Michener.

Be obscure clearly. – E.B. White

I love these quotes, especially the one by Ray Bradbury; I think it definitely is something that a lot of us can relate to, because writing can be a form of escape from reality, or it can be a way to deal with it.

I love collecting quotes too; I keep a notebook of quotes by famous people, because they're fun to read.

Love all the quotes - I can't say I've ever read Agatha Christie - but I completely agree that a good many ideas come while doing dishes. Something about scrubbing a pot of burned rice gets the creative side of my brain going...
