Ghost Story

Halloween is coming up, and it’s my kids favorite holiday (not mine, mine is Christmas :). My 13 year old LOVES everything scary. He is trying to convince my hubby to take him to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. That is too scary for me, but I do love a good ghost…

So I want recommendations for good, clean (no language please), non-gory ghost stories. I’m tossing around the idea for a new MS and for some reason ghost keep creeping into my mind. So please hit me with your best recommendations.

Can't help you here. I'm not into horror stuff either. Though when I was a kids there was an Alfred Hitchcock anthology of stories that scared the crap out of me. Just checked to see if I could find it. Hmmm . . . Al was a busy guy:

I can't help you much. The only two ghost stories I remember are both MG. WAIT TILL HELEN COMES and CHRISTINA'S GHOST. Both of them freaked me out so much I couldn't sleep for a week.

Wait, I just remembered another one. It had a ghost in it but it is more of a suspense than a paranormal if that makes sense. SUSPICION by Barbara Rogan. I don't remember any language but there may be some in there.

Halloween Horror Nights has a whole Walking Dead house - but I'm too scared to go! I think... We'll see... :o

ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD is the only one I can think of. I didn't find it scary.

I don't read a lot of ghost stories . . . even if technically I'm writing one.

All I can think of is The Raven, which isn't really a ghost story. Also, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The ending is insane.

I like Coraline by Neil Gaiman or The Graveyard Book. Anything by Mary Hahn is good too.

the frighteners...to watch or read
but if you're wanting ideas to write, i had a suggestion during a to z for a story about a couple that died and were buried in separate cemetaries, searching for each other as ghosts...i'm not a romantic

Drawing a total blank. And the harder I try, the more I hear Scooby Doo in my head!

The Graveyard Book is all I've got. But it's a wonderful book!

I am SO SCARED of ghost stories, so I don't think I've ever read one. I've seen a few movies, but I've steered cleared of horror movies, as well, for a long time. It's just not worth the following month of sleepless nights!

Well, I hate Halloween and haven't ready many ghost stories. Ha! I'll let everyone else take this one.

So excited to hear what you come up with for your new MS!

I'm right with you on Christmas! You can't get better than opening of presents around the Christmas tree and spending time with family.

Can't help ya out. I really dislike horror anything. I end up having nightmares :(

I'm a chicken when it comes to ghosts. I read Anna Dressed In Blood and thought it was grisly, but not terribly scary. But, it does have language.

Ohhh, I love a good ghost story! If you're looking for something younger, "The Crossroads: A Haunted Mystery" by Chris Grabenstein was a great read. I loved "A Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb, which is less scary, aiming older (I'd say it's YA, but the main ghosts are older and it's really their story), and very thought-provoking. "Anna Dressed in Blood" (YA) had some really cool ghost scenes - though I didn't find the main romance particularly compelling. "Coraline" by Neil Gaimen was fun and spooky. If you want to watch a good movie or two, I recommend "The Others" with Nicole Kidman (rated PG-13) and "Insidious" (PG-13). Both were quite fun and spooky, and not gory. I'm not 100% sure if they're all "bad-language free", it's been awhile, but I don't think it's excessive in any of them. Especially not "The Crossroads." Sorry for leaving such a long comment. Looking forward to hearing more about your MS idea, ^_^

Halloween is okay, but I could certainly skip it. Christmas is my favorite, too.

I was always a fan of Nancy Drew:-) If you're looking for something for contemporary, then The Ghost and the Goth series by Stacey Kade. We used to go to Halloween Horror Nights every year before we had kids. I'm seriously afraid of clowns and hubby had one follow me around for half the night one year, ahh!!!!

Hmm a good ghost story. When I was a kid, I read a lot of ghost stories. Mostly for middle reader. The one I remember the most was Christina's Ghost (or something like that) There were a ton of great non-scary ghost stories for kids back when I was in elementary school.

I'm with you, Angie, Halloween is so not my favorite holiday. My oldest keeps bugging me to do scary decorations - um, no. :)

I just read a thriller/fantasy that creeped me out a bit. The main character - a teenage boy - is in this old, half-destroyed house, down in the basement, when he hears a noise and looks up through a hole in the floor to see these kids dressed in 1940s clothes staring down at him. Gives me the creeps again just typing it. :)

I had a light bulb moment while reading the comments - what about A Christmas Carol? You get the best of both worlds, and it's not gory. You've probably already read it, though!
